According Thompson : "The Steak Eaters  —and many women Oscar voters as well—will come through for George Miller in the same way they did Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity." It's about the nuts and bolts recognition of the craft of fashioning cinema spectacle that makes your eyes pop. 

Organic. That's not a word you hear in Hollywood very often. That's George Miller's credo. If something doesn't fit or sit well, it doesn't happen. That's why his movies are so great—the ones he actually makes, from "Babe" to "Happy Feet." (Some have been left by the wayside, like "Contact" and "Justice League.") "Mad Max: Fury Road," dreamed up on an airplane and realized by a 70-year-old director 35 years after his feature debut with the original "Mad Max," does not follow any formula that any studio executive would recognize. "

Mad Max Fury Road should Win the Oscar for Best Picture !

MMFR should win the Oscar for best picture is the majority verdict of 7 FlickReel writers as 4 voted yes, 2 don't  and 1 maybe.

"As the most visually astounding movie of the year, there’s little doubt that Mad Max: Fury Road will receive recognition for its cinematography, sound, editing, and special effects come Oscar time. A few technical nominations is the very least George Miller’s magnum opus deserves. However, in a perfect world, Mad Max: Fury Road would be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress (Charlize Theron). Alas, the Academy is unlikely to recognise the film for one solitary reason: it’s an action picture. On the surface, Mad Max: Fury Road may seem like one giant car chase of epic preparations. On that basis, it’s easily one of the most enthralling, inventive, and unique chase movies of all time. What elevates the film to a whole new frontier, however, is the surprising depth of its narrative. Behind the nonstop insanity, there’s an astonishing amount of backstory and character development. Rather than hitting us over the head with plot details, though, Fury Road allows the audience to draw their own conclusions. In many respects, this is exactly what an action movie should do. The plot can be beyond simplistic and the action can be relentless, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still trigger a strong emotional response and make the audience think. George Miller has accomplished what so many other action directors like Michael Bay have failed to do. He has found the perfect balance in a perfect action picture. The Best Picture category isn’t called “Best Drama Picture.” It’s called “Best Picture.” This means that that the race should extend to call genres that break new grounds, ranging from animation, to comedy, to action. Mad Max: Fury Road isn’t just the best action movie of the year (although we still need to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens), it’s one best films in general and deserves to be recognised as such."

Charlize Theron relishes the idea of playing an amputee !

"When I looked at the storyboards before, I relished the idea of playing an amputee and hero. I was like, this is not going to come around anytime again. In the ultimate hardcore action film they're going to make the female lead be an amputee? This is … great. Now the responses coming back have been so — I can get choked up. I get so many emails from — not just young girls but amputees, not just women, just people, saying it's about time that we see more of this. Selfishly, I didn't think about that. I wasn't on some high horse. I knew that it would be a great thing for me to utilize as an actor."

"I’ve got to say one word: boldness. He’s a very bold filmmaker. He fears nobody, from critics to studios to audience to whatever. He makes his films. And that boldness came through on Lorenzo’s Oil, and I thoroughly enjoyed that boldness and working for him on that. Years and years later, when Fury Road came up, I knew enough about Fury Road on the grapevine — I could hear they were talking about problems in pre-production — and I remember thinking, “That’s going to be a big movie.” Then, all of a sudden, I get the phone call to go onboard, and it was that boldness that really made me decide to go on it — because I knew that George would end up with a very bold film, and I think he has. I’m glad he has."
